What you'll read about in this post:
☺ What a seed is, from the inside.
☺ How to store and care for seeds so they retain their potency for years.
☺ You'll learn about the hidden life of seeds.
☺ You'll learn the precise structure and nomenclature of a young cannabis plant.
☺ You'll learn the most effective and safest method for germinating marijuana seeds.
☺ You'll read about the disadvantages of using peat discs.
☺ We'll also remind you, unfortunately, that if you live in a country where human freedom as an individual is cruelly restricted in the ability to enjoy the gifts of nature, you're not even allowed to germinate. We mourn with you. Let's hope that, damn it, things will change soon.
☺ Reading will take you about 6 minutes, including this introduction ;) Enjoy!
A seed gives life.
A seed, or rather the embryo within it, is the beginning of a new plant organism, from which veins for the juicy cannabinoids will grow.
Marijuana seeds (and the seeds of many other plants) can survive for many years without losing their value under good storage conditions. During this time, the cannabis seed lives a latent life, while the embryo remains in a state of physiological dormancy. This state persists until the seed encounters suitable, favorable conditions for development.
This extraordinary ability of seed plants evolved as an expression of their incredibly strong will to survive, even in conditions that are not always favorable.
Cannabis is a dicotyledonous angiosperm. Because, quite simply, they have an embryo with two cotyledons (cotyledons), which store reserve – starting – nutrients, consisting of proteins, fats, and sugars – in different proportions for the seeds of different plants. Hemp seeds are primarily composed of fats, but all seeds also contain glucosides, alkaloids, enzymes, vitamins, trace elements, and others. These are generally the same chemical components found in the plant. In the seed, they are highly dehydrated, as the seeds contain up to 15% water.
It is precisely because of this water in the seeds, this 15% H2O, that proper seed storage is so important. A constant supply of air and too much constant heat cause the seed to dry out and thus become unusable. Show me a single collector who likes duds.
Because no one likes duds, we advise you to make sure before purchasing hemp seeds that they have been stored refrigerated, in properly sealed packaging.
Also, remember to properly protect the seeds in your collection. Paper, envelopes, or other airtight packaging won't guarantee your seeds' proper condition – they'll dry out. You need to cut off their oxygen supply to prevent them from losing their moisture.
When the sprout takes off!
Marijuana seed germination
For a cannabis seed to shed its cap, or technically speaking – for it to germinate and develop a hypocotyl (the stem of the plant between the first leaves and the radicle) – the right conditions must be met.
Marijuana seeds need moisture, warmth, oxygen, and a caring caregiver to germinate. They can also germinate without a caregiver; the question is whether the caregiver can manage without them ;)
WE REMIND YOU THAT GERMINATING MARIJUANA FLOWER SEEDS IS PROHIBITED BY LAW IN POLAND. FOR GERMINATING AND GROWING CANNABIS FLOWERS (!), YOU ARE THREATENED WITH PENALTIES – FINES, CHARGES, PRISON. NO – THIS IS NOT A JOKE. DON'T SPROUT – DON'T BECOME AN OUTSIDER HUNTED BY LAW AND ORDER.
The simplest and most effective way to germinate marijuana seeds is to do it on a tissue. Or other, unscented paper or kitchen paper towel. So, let's take this paper towel, for example. Fold it in four, wet it as much as possible, and place it on a plate. The seeds go on top. Take another piece of paper, fold it, wet it, and cover the seeds. If you don't have enough seeds, you can fold the first paper in half, where the seeds landed. Tilt the finished plate to drain off excess water. This isn't meant to be a swimming pool, just a decent amount of moisture.
Seeds don't like being immersed in water for long periods; they can't absorb oxygen from it, for example.
Soaking is primarily intended to facilitate bursting and germination, but too long can damage the seeds. Wrap the prepared, drained package in plastic wrap, poke a few holes in it, and set aside in a warm place for two days (but not too warm; 20-25°C is ideal). You can, of course, peek at the seeds, but avoid unnecessary touching. Monitor the humidity – it needs to be constantly moist, which is why you're wrapping them in plastic wrap – to prevent the paper from drying out too quickly.
In general, remember to always approach the seeds with clean hands.
Peat discs are becoming increasingly popular, but for several reasons, they're not the best solution. First and foremost, when seeds are placed in discs, you lose control of the germination process. You might not notice that a seed needs help popping or that it's a dud, and you might not be able to add its replacement in time. By messing with the disc—as impatient gardeners tend to do—you maximize the risk of damaging the sprout.
When a seed is placed upside down in the disc, the rootlet isn't always able to return to its proper path. It can even become entangled in the non-woven fabric of the disc's walls. This forces us to interfere, touch, and twist the seedlet, which creates the risk of maximum damage to the developing rootlet.
Yes, a disc may seem convenient, and it usually is, but when things don't go perfectly, the disc can contribute to seed loss through damage.
Do Marijuana Seeds Need Light to Germinate?
Probably not for germination itself, but the light provides a temperature that helps it germinate more easily and quickly.
By germinating "with a tissue," we ensure that we only need to touch the "awakened" seed once, placing the sprout in the soil. A germinated seed, placed sideways on the ground and covered with a pinch of soil, is the ideal starting point for the future root. It is generally not recommended to make holes, press the sprout root-side down, or perform other procedures that can easily damage the delicate sprout.
Place it, cover it, moisten it, don't bury it – it will be fine.
Many Collector's Greetings! :)
Once again, just to be clear. We do not encourage, incite, or in any way encourage anyone to engage in criminal activity. If you live in Poland or another country where marijuana is on the list of prohibited substances, you MUST NOT germinate marijuana seeds. You can feed them to your parrots, or roast them and add them to a salad.
